Is working from home better?

It really depends.

Better for you? 🤷

Better for your family?

Better for the company? 🏢

Who owns the company? 🤔

Who owns the office building and collects the rent? 🏢💸

Who sells the vehicles and fuel you’d need to commute to work each day? 🚗⛽

Who can justify their existence in a company by ‘managing you’ if you share the same proximity? 👤

Not all sectors are suited to home working.

I don’t know many subsea maintenance engineers that work from home. 🛠️

Do the collaborative efforts of you and your colleagues dictate the overall likelihood of hitting your goals? If so, I can’t see how everyone working in isolation can be a good thing…

…at least not all the time. 🤝

Can many people claim they know EVERYTHING there is to know in their role, and that they have near perfect work habits? Are there more experienced, knowledgeable, talented & disciplined people employed within your business? Getting to work closely with them should be seen as an opportunity to learn & develop. 🧠🤓

A home office can be lonely. 😢

It requires a lot of discipline, structure, and self-management. 🗂️

You have to buy your own coffee. ☕

Naps are a constant temptation. 😴

Your pets are a distraction. 🐾

But personally…

…I get to see my 3 kids every morning. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

See them after school. 🏫

Have dinner together every evening. 🍽️

Have family games night, film nights, do arts & crafts, help them with homework. 🎮🎨📚

Make time for my own hobbies (reading, painting, tabletop gaming, daily gym, bouldering, etc). 📖🎨🎲🧗

Have a fun relationship with my partner that isn’t just about coordinating logistics and to-do lists. 👫

I get to spend time with my elderly parents multiple times a week, and make their lives a bit easier. 👵👴

And thankfully, working from home, I still solve enough of my clients' recruitment challenges to pay for all my family’s needs. 💼💸

Don’t chase other people’s goals…you do you. 🚀

Some people are happiest spending most of their time outside the house.

Get yourself a work ‘set-up’ where you love the process, and aren’t merely chasing a light at the end of the tunnel. 💡🏡

Just be sure to feed the things you want to see grow along the way.🌱
